# What Are Crypto ETF Flows? Inflows, Outflows and Creations

> The net money moving into or out of exchange-traded funds. For spot crypto ETFs, inflows mean new shares created (and coins bought for the fund); outflows mean shares redeemed.

**ETF flows** measure how much money is entering or leaving exchange-traded funds over a period. For crypto, the flows most closely watched are those of **US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs**, which hold the actual coins rather than futures contracts.

## Flows are not trading volume

When one investor sells ETF shares to another on the stock exchange, shares change hands but the fund's size does not change. Flows happen at a different layer, through the **creation and redemption** process:

- **Creation (inflow):** an authorised participant — typically a large broker-dealer — delivers cash (or, where permitted, the underlying asset) to the fund and receives new ETF shares. For a spot Bitcoin ETF, that cash is used to acquire Bitcoin for the fund's holdings.
- **Redemption (outflow):** the authorised participant returns ETF shares to the fund, the shares are cancelled, and cash or coins come back out.

So a day of **net inflows** means the fund created more shares than it redeemed, and its holdings grew. Net outflows mean the opposite.

## Why flows are watched

- **A view of demand from traditional investors.** ETFs are the route by which many advisers, retirement accounts and institutions hold crypto exposure, so their flows are a readable proxy for that demand.
- **Actual buying and selling of the asset.** Because creations are backed by coin purchases for the fund, large sustained inflows correspond to real accumulation, and outflows to disposals.
- **Streaks.** Consecutive weeks of inflows or outflows are often reported as a trend — our coverage noted eight straight weeks of US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETF outflows in early July 2026.

## Cautions

- Flows and price can diverge for long periods: heavy inflows into a flat market, or price rising while funds bleed.
- Daily flow figures are compiled from issuer disclosures and are often revised or reported with a lag.
- Flows describe what happened, not what will happen next.
